Well it gives you an idea of just where your business is sitting with all of its finances at a particular date. It shows your businesses assets, liabilities and shareholders equity.

So the idea of this is that you can see exactly what financial position you are in at a glance, and the idea being that your assets balance out your liabilities and shareholders equity.
